The Malis family has been longtime supporters of Pine Crest School’s computer science initiative through their philanthropy and their time, sharing insights with Lisa Ockerman, Executive Director of Educational Design and Strategic Initiatives, and her computer science team. Mark is a new member of the School's Board of Trustees, having previously served two years on the Pine Crest Advisory Council.
Growing up in South Florida, Candace spent summers attending Pine Crest Day Camp.
“We felt one of the most important things we could give Jake was the best education possible,” said Candace. “From our research, we felt that was Pine Crest. When we first brought Jake to campus for our family visit, as we were leaving, he asked us if we could drop him off the next day! It was a good fit for Jake from the get-go. He has always been very happy here.”
The computer science curriculum is of particular interest to the Malis family.
“Candace and I owned a technology company, so we have always been passionate about technology, especially computer science,” said Mark. “There is a point when kids start leaning toward gaming, but Jake started getting involved in programming on his own. That made it fun for us to have something to do together.”
“We all know that we live in a world powered by technology, but we are heading to a time when there will be a shortage of computer science professionals,” continued Mark. “Artificial intelligence (AI) will disrupt the world as jobs are eliminated. AI is quickly making amazing advancements in the medical, legal, transportation, military, finance, and economic sectors. Students with computer science skills will be at an advantage. They will need to use technology no matter which field they choose to have a career in; this is why we like to share resources and knowledge with Pine Crest to help the computer science program grow.”
Jake has embraced numerous opportunities at Pine Crest to hone his coding skills, including joining the Robotics team and starting the Upper School’s first Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning Club.
When asked why they support the school through The Pine Crest Fund and their time, Candace said, “the School has given so much to Jake — academically, emotionally, and socially — and we want to give back and help the school continue to be the best private school in Florida.”
Sharing her sentiment, Mark continued, “we have the time and the passion for education. We have re-learned how to study seeing how Jake studies and have become really interested in the learning process.”
“We are grateful to the teachers for their dedication and passion,” said Candace. “The faculty is amazing, and it is great to be at a school that really encourages the students to reach their full potential. When I see the kids, they all look so happy.”
