Five (5) Pine Crest Upper School students presented at the annual Youth Climate Summit hosted by the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) and Broward County Public Schools.

Kathryn Zimmerman ’23, Andres van Woerkom ’23, Vicky van Woerkom ’22, Whit Hudson ’23, and Paige Hudson ’24, leaders of Pine Crest Upper School’s The Extra Catch Club, presented to more than 4,000 Broward County Public School students in grades six through twelve at the virtual summit.

The Extra Catch Club at Pine Crest is focused on ocean ecology through beach, waterway, land-based, and ocean clean ups. In addition, students work to spread awareness of the impact of marine pollution.

The Extra Catch produced a three-part video series for the Summit on “making a difference for your community" with a focus on marine ecology. The videos were approved by Broward County Public Schools as science-based educational content for the Summit and will be rolled out to all public school students following the virtual event.

After Summit attendees watched the video series, they watched an interview of The Extra Catch team members conducted by MODS. Click to watch the interview.

“We learned so much by producing our video content and collaborating with MODS for the Summit,” said Kathryn Zimmerman ’23. “We are so excited that so many students had an opportunity to learn about ocean ecology. We hope students will join The Extra Catch in our movement to spread awareness of the impact of ocean pollution.”

The Extra Catch hosts beach and ocean cleanups throughout the year. The next event will take place on Sunday, March 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC) in Hollywood. For details about the event, email [email protected]
