Nov 27 - Nov 29
Pine Crest Upper School students in the three-year social entrepreneurship program won first and second place in the Eco Design Challenge hosted by the University of Delaware.
Students had to develop and then pitch a potential solution to address one of two eco challenges: combating extreme heat in urban environments or reducing/ending waste entering oceans.
The first place team, Therm Turf with Gaby Frei ’24, Sophie Whiteside ’24, Anaya Shintre ’24, and Maya Heyman ’24, addressed extreme heat by redesigning the rubber pellets currently used on turf fields. Therm Turf created a pellet made from silicon sand coated with kevlar to reduce the turf surface temperature by up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
Isaac Berman ’24, Gabriela Guimaraes ’24, Jake Julien ’24, and Lee Staller ’24 placed second in the competition with their idea Sidewalk Sunscreen. Sidewalk Sunscreen is an alternative way to build sidewalks that would reduce the sidewalk's thermal mass.
Congratulations to all!
