Photo of students showing their awardsPine Crest Upper School students, Andrew Chung ’20 and Jonathan Williams ’21, competed at the South Florida Cardiology Conference recently.

Andrew and Jonathan were the only high school students competing at the conference after their abstract on the utility of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging versus SPECT CT imaging in cardiac stress testing was accepted by conference organizers.

At the conference, the students competed at the poster session where they presented their findings in front of the judge and we were scored.

“Generally, these poster competitors are medical students and residents,” said Andrew. “Winning second place was a shock!”

This project was conducted as part of the Science Research program at Pine Crest School lead by Ms. Jennifer Gordinier.

“We got involved with the competition through our mentor Dr. Abdullah Sarkar,” said Jonathan.

The students also worked with another mentor, Dr. Jon Kotler.

“We volunteered to pursue this project with Dr. Kotler because we both are interested in the medical field,” said Andrew. “We found this topic and saw that there wasn't concrete research behind it so we went off to do our own.”

Congratulations, Andrew and Jonathan!
