Student Competes at 2019 INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair

Pine Crest Upper School student Christian Ehrnrooth ’19 represented Pine Crest School and the Broward County School District at the 2019 INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, AZ recently.
Christian was awarded an all-expense paid trip to participate in the competition with his qualifying project titled “Design and Numerical Analysis of a Novel Co-Flow Jet System to Improve the Lift, Design, and Fuel Efficiency of a Commercial Airline Wing.”
“It was arguably the highlight of my senior year,” said Christian. “The thrill of being among so many talented individuals from every corner of the earth all there for the sake of science was both incredibly exciting and humbling to the extent that I didn’t want to leave despite the 100+ degree weather. Beyond just the competition, it was incredibly inspiring to meet the astronauts and Nobel laureates judging my work and seeing my peers treated not as students but as respected scientists.”
Christian’s research, conducted in part under the direction of Dr. Gecheng Zha at theUniversity of Miami Aerodynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics Lab, aims to improve aeronautic efficiency by engineering a co-flow wing design, a physical system of intake and output air circulation designed to energize the boundary layer between a wing’s surface and surrounding jet stream, in order to maximize fuel efficiency and flight range of commercial airliners.
Christian won a fourth place special award from the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics and a fourth place category award in Engineering Mechanics.
