Student journalists from The Crestian yearbook and from the Talented Writers Program (TWP) attended the 99th Annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Spring Convention. The event took place in New York City and this location gave students the opportunity to meet with a group of Pine Crest School alumni who work in media-related careers.
At the CSPA convention, students attended workshops on a variety of topics and received feedback from experts in the field of scholastic journalism and literary publications.
Pine Crest alumni shared stories about their career paths and answered deep and interesting questions presented by the students. They also offered valuable advice to finding success in the workplace. Students had the opportunity to tour the New York offices of the Wall Street Journal and visit the newsroom of the respected news outlet. They also met with executives from Fox Sports & Entertainment and the National Football League (NFL).
At the Wall Street Journal, the traveling group met with Morgan Manella ’12, Platform Editor, and her colleagues who provided an overview of the platform team and the push alert strategy. Morgan referenced how her love for journalism was sparked by working on the Pine Crest Newspaper, formerly called TypeOne, and serving as its Editor-in-Chief.
Martha Datlen ’05, Director of Digital Client Services for FOX Sports & Entertainment, engaged students in conversation about thoughtful solutions and about personal career paths. She encouraged students to remain open and imagine possibilities outside the box.
Kevin Boothe ’01, Director of Football Development for the National Football League and Pine Crest School Trustee, gave students insight into the NFL as a complex organization. Mr. Boothe, a former NFL player and a two-time Super Bowl champion, spoke to what it meant to be a Panther in college and in the world of corporate sports.
Attending a total of 13 sessions at the CSPA conference gave students a breadth of information and offered new perspectives to approach media production.
